850 rack and pinion not a turbo 1993

Post by Jano526 »

Anyone have to replace this part? My parents gave me this car 3 years ago with 35,000 mi and perfect maintenance record. 6 months prior however, my dad had to replace the rack and pinion to the tune of $800. I just found out it needs replaced again. What's going on?

1. Rack and pinion replacement - hardly ever hear of it. What could be causing this?

2. Does it have to be done by a professional?

3. If it can be done by non-professional, Where the cheapest? Junkyards?

I am a student on limited budget and didn't need this. The car now has 70,000 miles but it should still have many more. I'm just sick about this. What to do?

Hmmm, odd. Maybe the unit was originally replaced w/ a subpar quality aftermarket rack. Replacing the steering rack is not an easy job b/c you have to drop the subframe, which of course requires an engine cradle. I would not recommend trying it yourself unless you're a very experienced weekend mechanic. I can provide you w/ the documentation on how to go about the job though if you're interested. I'd check out FCP Groton for a rebuilt steering rack; much better than something out of a junkyard.
