Volvo 850 vs 2011 Prius
Not my cars. But my wife does have a 2010 Prius in the same color. Pretty impressive the Prius took the hit like a champ. I'm sure our cars are safe but the new designs look to be much stronger.

Most cars these days can take a rear-end hit pretty well; whereas the fronts are designed to crumple to reduce shock to the drivers. I guarantee if that Prius hit another Prius in the back, it would be crumpled up just as much as that Volvo was.
Our 2002 Camry took a hard hit to the rear bumper, but didn't do much damage other than punch a hole in the plastic bumper cover. Wrecked the guy's RAV-4 that hit us.

I feel bad for that V70 wagon in the picture above...
It's terrible when any car winds up like that but especially a Volvo, due to the fact that it probably would've traveled another 200K miles with just routine maintenance.

Any hatch with seats close to rear window will have little in the way of crumple zones in the rear. The rear body is mostly an occupant safety cell.

The safety of the car should not be judged at how much the front bumper or rear bumper is damaged and their associated repair cost.
The safety is measured based on the most precious cargo: the occupants inside the cage.
In any crash, if the occupants can walk out alive, it was a "good crash".

I agree with CN90 as far as that last statement goes. A good strong cage and adequate restraint/airbag systems do the job of protecting occupants. Still I'd rather be in a S80 than a Smart when hitting a wall at 45mph or more. The added G forces sustained by the occupants of having little to no crumple zones could be enough to kill.
