I have a 2004 S40 that i recently had the timing belt changed on. Got it back and as i was driving off the check engine light came on. ODB reader shows code P0017 (Crankshaft/Camshaft position correlation - bank 1 sensor B). It's not driving any different, but I know something isn't right if the CEL is on. The mechanic that did it is trying to give me a hard time, telling me he's double checked that the timing is all lined up and it couldn't be a tooth off or it wouldn't run right. He's also said the oil viscosity may be causing it (but it never did before...). I'm young/small/female, so i feel as if they're trying to feed me a load of bull and not fix my car. I'm going to keep on them till they get it right, but in the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be causing this and how to fix it?
Also, this mechanic was not a volvo specialist, just a general mechanic, so if there's a particular volvo "trick" that has to be done when changing timing belts, he may not have known about it - please share.

I will let smarter minds say more but is it possible he did not preload the vvt hub correctly?

is the "VVT" the variable valve timing? And, pardon my ignorance, but what do you do to 'preload the hub'? just so I'll have some info to take back with me and some better questions to ask.

Before removing the belt the VVT needed to be turned past its marks and then returned to them per Volvo procedure. Now that the belt was likely replaced the tech should rotate the crank 180 degrees past its timing mark and then backwards to its timing mark. It is at this point that the marks should be compared to see if the cam is in proper position. If not they should be adjusted properly and the code cleared to see if it returns. If the original tech can not help you, locate a local Volvo specialist and have them assist you.
