Doomed for Expensive Oil Changes?

Post by raceymountain »

So I'm an avid Volvo owner, and I recently purchased my '07 XC90. Upon reading the owners manual I find that for my climate (South Texas) I am going to have to run 0W-30/5W40 oil in it; (essentially EXTREMELY expensive oil that you have to special order at 8qts+ an oil change.) I was wondering if anyone has run theirs with a more common weight without problems, or am I forever doomed to a near 100 dollar oil change every time? Thoughts..., experiences...., info....?

$100? That's crazy. Here's a Bob is the Oil Guy thread that has some varied opinions: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ub ... er=2566465

No actually it's the inline 6, AWD

And all I got from his forum was M1 and the Castrol, same weight I mentioned, which are 40 each for a 5qt jug, which you would need 2 of. Someone said they use the Shell Rotella T6 5W-40, but I'm concerned with using that because essentially it's been formulated for a diesel engine, and I dont think it would be set up right for my gas'er....

I read the manual as giving you three choices:

0W-30
0W-40
5W40

Anyway you can get Mobil 1 0W-40 Synthetic quarts down to $6.65 at Amazon for example. Jugs are 5.1 quart, pack of 4.

I get M1 5w-30 and 0w-20 at WalMart for $30 for a 5 qt jug. That's about the best you're gonna do really.

Also keep in mind that using a synthetic oil you DO NOT need to change every 3000 mi. 7500 is find in most cases if you drive 1000+ mi a month.

The 4 pack of 5.1qt jugs is 144.70 on Amazon (yes I have prime), that makes it a little over 7.09 a quart....
I was essentially wondering if anyone had run a different weight in a similar climate as mine with success because the only way I can get this weight of oil is through ordering it online, and since I'm having to order a larger quantity, I dont like paying retail price for it still...ya know?

No, I change my older Volvo at about 5K intervals, and I'm pretty much going to change this one at about 7K since I only put about 300 miles on it a month or so. Also the weights you mentioned will NOT work for me, as it's over 86 degrees here even in the winter (no joke.)

You can also find 5W-40 just about anywhere (commonly used in diesels).

Rotella's good stuff.

I see

Post-purchase rebate: $12.00
Price after rebate: $132.70

... which I was basing my $6.65 calculation off.
