Can't remove relay/fuse board, replace fan relay

Post by SnowOwl »

My 2003 S60 cooing fan kept running after the car was shut off. Never noticed it before, but I had a FIAT that did it all the time, so, no problem, maybe I just didn't notice it before. The second time it happened, it completely drained the battery, and whenever there is any electricity available, jump box, etc., the fan runs. There is a connector on top of the fan shroud, and disconnecting it stops the fan running. Car drives fine, temp gauge right in the middle as always. Of course, Summer is coming...

There is a fuse/relay box under the hood, driver's side near the shock tower, and under the cover there is a fan relay listed, but it says it is on the underside of the board. No problem. Pull the connector off, take four Torx screws out, two clips on the front inside undone, the board will not lift out. I can't find what's still holding it.

Does anybody know how this is done? I really don't want to force it and break the board.

See this is an old post with no responses. I have exactly this problem getting the relay box cover off with a 2001 V70 XC. Torx screws out, two clips off, but the thing won't budge and no signs of other fasteners. SnowOwl, did you ever figure this out?

The metallic cover is glued with a thick silicone, basically you have to pry all the sides off with a crewdriver, careful not to touch the electronics Inside, and not to bend the cover. Inside you have two capacitors probably broken, those are BIFA 1200mF 40 VDC (you can get them off EBay). They are clamped on the circuit board, so you need to cut them off and try to solder new ones in place. I did use lower capacitance ones, I think it was about 800mF 25 VDC, and it works, the hardest is to solder them.
