740 transmission quits, then works after restart

I am new here and have a problem I need help with. 1989 740g, it starts and takes off fine but after about a block it acts as if the trans becomes disconnected. I drained the trans fluid and it was brown. so I refilled and drained again, again brown. drained again, getting kinda red now so refilled again. it drives a couple of blocks then slips out of gear again, but if you shut it off and restart it you can go again a couple of blocks. it feels like it is hunting for a gear to shift into when it starts messing up. I had a similar problem with a jeep grand cherokee and replacing th throttle position sensor fixed it. so I drained it and filled it three times shouldn't that be enough? anyone think it might be the throttle position sensor?

When it quits, if you leave it running and check the fluid, is it still full? Maybe pull the pan and change the trans filter.
