2000 V70 headlights and dash light not working

Post by burgertimegirl »

I have a 2000 V70. My headlights have stopped working. My dash lights do not work, either. My brake lights do work. If I flip my high beam switch, my headlights come on for a few seconds, then go off.

I checked the fuses and they are all fine. The dealer said to bring it in because it needed to be hooked up to a Volvo computer. He said it sounds like a central electrical module, which would be $1200.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

Better to have it scanned first as 2000 models use a CEM for a lot of the functions.

A new CEM may cost what the dealer quoted but you may be able to find a used one for a small amount of money. The used one will need to be programmed to the car by a Volvo dealer.

The dealer will of course tell you it's a risk and not worth the time/effort.

Have it scanned and then post back the findings.

Thanks for the post. So does a Volvo dealer have to scan the car first? Or can another shop check it?

It could be something as simple as a faulty headlight switch which is the same part as a 97-99 V70 or S70.

To scan the CEM properly you will need Vida*Dice or a good scanner that a independant.Volvo shop will use. See who's in your area. There's a repair shop guide here on this forum.

1+,

headlight switch is notorious for going bad in these cars.
New Volvo HL switch is $65.
Or get used HL switch on ebay for $15-$20. If you buy used, then 2 of them.
One to replace and one for glovebox. never know you are in the middle of nowhere and the HL switch is out.

I always have a spare switch in glovebox (knowing these cars issues LOL)...

Replacing it is very simple, info in forum.

Check but PN 8601773 is used for 1998 through 2004 models:

CEM in an American 2000 V70 ? That's a P80, not a P2.
I think we're a year off here...No CEM in there for a US MY 2000.

If the fuses are all OK, look at the "moving" parts.
I'd suggest starting with the headlight switch or
maybe the electrical portion of the ignition switch.

I had a head light switch that did that and I took the switch apart and fixed it with super glue.

Actually I WAS thinking about the P80 model but I was incorrect so thanks for pointing that out.

The electrical part of the ignition switch is not the same as earlier models on the 2000 if after a certain chassis range and is less troublesome.

The part number for the headlight switch according to Vida for LHD cars (exc CAL) is 8622022 or 8622023 which is superceded to 30739333 and costs around $45 new.

Should be a DIYer to repair headlights on this model.

As precopster already pointed out, in searching for used parts on ebay, the following will be helpful...

The HL Switch: PN 8601773, 8622022 or 8622023 is now ---> 30739333.
