s60r blown engine
s60r blown engine
I have a 2005 s60r. I was driving down the road around 65 mph. car died on me, Took to mechanic, and was told Timing belt broke, and since this is a 0 clearance engine, that the engine is blown and buy a new or used one. Totaling over $5500.00.-$7500.00 What are my options? Can I replace valves, rings etc.. cheaper than a new/used engine swap-out. Thank you for any advise first post.
Welcome to the forum!
1st off, your post is in the wrong section, a 2005 is a P2 model & should be posted there, this is 2011-up.
As for your engine, $5500-7500 sounds fairly excessive, without knowing the specifics of the R, typically a ripped t-belt does not produce significant damage on pistons, the cylinder head needs to be removed & new valves & probably new valve guides installed, or a used head or engine can be installed.
For restoring your existing head, I would say depending on the shop & materials used, the bill should come in somewhere between $1500 & &3000.
Nevertheless, I'm notoriously suspicious of repair shops, are you trusting the place, have they shown you the ripped belt, possibly still in the car? What kind of shop is it, dealership, Volvo specialist, import shop, all makes & models? These cars imo are best serviced by independent Volvo specialists that know & value these cars but are also willing to do complicated repairs @ realistic fares where the stealership would try to sell you a new engine, trany etc.
Was there any kind of special noise before the car stopped?
Good luck, Ben

Clearwater Heads can supply you with a complete head with cover ready to fit, though you'd need to check if the 2005 R head is something special in which case they could refurbish your existing head.
I've seen many favourable comments on their service.
Usually pistons have some notching that can lead to hot spots when valves contact them. This may need to be addressed. The pistons are almost never holed as a result of contact with the valves in these engines.

I was curious how long belt lasted before it broke.
The head will have to be removed to get an answer. Once head is removed the pistons can be moved around enough to see if the rings stay against cylinder wall or are they stuck to piston. If rings are stuck then you have decisions to make beyond repairing head.

I suggest you find an experienced Volvo mech as your first step. You probably have some bent valves, everything else is speculation, including the 'blown motor' diagnosis.
My IM deals with this all the time, a full motor replacement is very rare.
Caveat Emptor.
