Learn ya something.

When not watching cat videos I sometimes learn something from the intraweb.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight-five_engine

"The inline-five is known for its characteristic sound. Unlike other engine configurations, the inline-five's sound cannot be replicated by doubling the cylinders".

Must be something to do with the harmonics of 5 sources...(?)

The Volvo inline 5 will go down in history as an epic engine. RIP Volvo I5.

Our chat today got me thinking about this engine so I did a little reading. It's a quick read and interesting-highly recommended.

I agree to the awesome sound of a 5 cylinder!

My current car with a 5 cylinder is my 2005 XC70 and my last 5 cylinder car was a couple '87 Audi 4ks that I had. I wish the XC70 had more growl like the 4ks did though.

The VW I5's have a very muted growly sound. They're also quite loud under acceleration for most cars on the market today. The Chevy Colorado 5-cylinder can definitely be told as a 5.

But the Volvos...yes...they're VERY distinctive. I love the sound of a 5-cylinder Volvo going by, ESPECIALLY the N/A's (sorry turbo guys, they just sound way cooler).

That sounds serious...isn't it interesting how people are so sensitive to sound? The sound of engine "A" moves people, the sound of engine "B" sounds sad and annoying.
