2009 XC60 3.0T Catalytic Converter

Hello everyone

My emissions check alight came on recently and was diagnoses with code P04 2000. "Catalyst system efficiency below min threshold value"

The garage says this means I need to replace the catalytic converter. It is a very expensive exercise but the garage did mention that that can remove the cat completely and just add a silencer in its place. They say that this method also fools the computer box so the emissions light does not keep coming on.

So my question is: Can this be done and how important is it to have a catalytic converter?

The car has just on 200 000km so the cat is probably due for change.

Please could have I have some thoughts on this I would really appreciate it.

Environmentally speaking it's very important. It converts toxic gases into safer ones by reaction of rare metals and helps clean the air our children breathe. It may pay to have a second opinion on this one. The engine computer may be falsely calling.

Just my 2 cents but garages should be more responsible with assisting our air quality.

I know some people have gotten around catalysts with sensor spacers but I also know that is not an assured thing that the sensor extender "trick" will work on your XC60. Newer cars have more discriminating interpretation of the rear O2 sensor that detects catalyst function.

I'm not sure what options you have in SA other than Volvo spare parts. High quality catalytic converters (and cheap short life ones) are available that can be welded in place of your existing ones are sold in North America.
