Broken Timing belt ~ would you repair it or not

Post by S70 Guy »

a Friend of mine drove his 94 960 6cylinder until the belt broke.
He is the third owner , knows the car history. Interior and body in good condition. His mechanic took a look at it without going to deep, saw a few bent rods. Said without going very deep guessed more bent rods but it could be fixed. Estimated about 16 hours labor. total cost about 2 grand.
Here are the question:
1) would you recomend putting 2 grand into a 12 year old car?
2) How much damage is done when a belt breaks? Oh yeah, he was on the highway when it broke and the car engine shut down.

I'd buy a used engine with much less miles. Try www.erievovo.com Call them after you get their number from the website.

Typically you bend valves when the timing belt brakes, not rods. I suppose if a valve head snapped off, broke the combustion chamber and let in coolant you might bend the rod on that one cylinder.

Either way the head will have to be reworked and a new set of valves installed. I would think you could do a stock type rebuild of an engine for less than $2000...but then again I'm used to rebuilding domestic V8s.

It would be quicker to buy a used engine with less miles.
