Hi, got a gearbox problem on my 2003 V40s 1800, very stiff sometimes changing gear, ok normally when cold but more difficult when hot A quick change is difficult partcularly changing up. If you leave it until you feel a slight 'click' as you put it in and then complete the change it goes in fine, otherwise it can crunch. Changing down is not a problem strangely. Changed the oil but no different. Car drives ok including 2 x 200 mile trips the last 2 weeks. Might need to change the gearbox or linkage but looking in the handbook there are 3 possible types listed. How can I find out which one is fitted?
Thanks
2003 V40s Which type of gear box?

Thanks for both your answers, I'll get the clutch cylinders checked out and enter the VIN no to see what box it takes. Very helpful, thanks again

Hmmm still confused by the VIN no! Still shows 3 possible boxes for the car (I think!) Reg is BG03JWF Estate - after that it gets confusing!

The VIN number will be found stamped on to a plate in the cars engine bay, an easier way is to see what it is from the V5 registration document for the car, this is the number you need to enter in to the box on the linked site to see what your own car is made up of, the vehicles registration (BG03 XYZ) isn't of any use at all to the vehicle manufacturer as it was applied after it left the factory - Mike

Use the VIN stamped on the plate on firewall engine bay.
I just tested this link against my own V40 and all checked out except manuf' year appears to be 2003 not 2002 ?
The actual chassis number 927667 backs it up also as 920000 onwards are model year 2003.
Paperwork ex Japan stated manuf' year 2002.
(2nd hand vehicle import to NZ. - Built Belgium for Japanese market)
Confirmed my 5 speed auto transmission correctly. AW55-50SN

There is no box on the linked site to enter the VIN no into just a general explanation with different segments covering the different options. VIN is YV1VW14K23F990xxx
YV1 is the manufacturers code, V = the Vehicle type W = 5 doors Next is the engine type = 14 is B418452 (also on the plate on side of the engine) Next is emmissions K Next is gearbox I assume that is 2 = M56 (also just found on top of the gearbox thanks to volvo handbook! M56H) Not sure what the 3 refers to could be the manufacture year Next is F which is a factory code and lastly the chassis no
Took a time but I think i've solved the riddle thanks to all your help.
Think the clutch is cable operated as no master cylinder apparent
Again thanks for your help without which the mystery would not be solved

Sounds to me like you have deciphered it all right.
The 3 after the gearbox type relates to the year of manuf'. 2003 which matches yours ok.
Chassis numbers for 2003 onwards start from 920000 -
I only found this link after reading your initial post and browsed the net for an answer for you.
Must say its potentially quite useful.
Finding that my V40 should be a 2003 according to the VIN also is good news in that its actually a year younger but not sure whether to contact the NZ Vehicle Registration Authority about the discrepancy on the importing paperwork supplied from Japan. Might be a 'can of worms'.
The speedo mileage was verified by 'Jevic' as genuine at import so not a big deal to me really.
