1995 960 boosting an N/A motor.

Post by boosted »

I'm looking at buying my second volvo. I currently have a 780 but I want something better. I have a chance at buying a 960 wagon with the B6304 and I was wondering if it's boostable without any supporting mods like pistons and rings. I know I may need bigger injectors and an engine management system but is there anything else?

BTW the car looks great and runs nice and is only $650 USD.

I don't really know your answer, but would think, pistons and rings maybe the easiest part. There might be a problem with the thickness of the cylinder wall to the coolant passage, if too thin might have a heat overload for the coolant system. That is usually why one will see with manufacturers that might sell a turbo version of standard size engine, they dial down the bore a tad making it a slighly smaller cubic volume to get thicker cylinder walls.

But here is photo I picked up a few years ago, someone with a lot of money and time. Sure is beautiful though. It is reported to be 600 hp.

That's a good looking engine bay I must say. I know this is the white block but that's all I know. I've heard with proper maintenance, it's bullet proof so to speak. I just don't have any experience with this motor.

You can easily use an S80 T6 block mated to the original sump and the 960 head. This trick has been used by afew 960 modifiers out there.

As well as allowing the same pistons as a T5 or R you have access to all the aftermarket conrods. You can use the S80 T6 valve springs, collets and lifters which are improved.

An interesting combo would be the whole T6 turbo setup but I don't know if it's been done as the headers may not clear the steering gear. Most modifiers go with a large Holset turbo and custom pipes.
