Won't shift out of 1st gear - 1995 850 GLT

Post by Rupie »

Won't shift out of 1st gear in the mornings until I travel about a mile. Ussually only happens when it is cold. I changed the ATF and I still have the problem. Is it the Neutral Saftey Switch (Gear Position Sensor). and if so how hard is it to change myself. There was one occation when the shift light started blinking and from what I understand the car went into "limb mode" (4th Gear ). Does anyone now what I'm talking about :?

Thanks in advance

I had exactly the same problem in my 1994 850 Turbo wagon. It is definately the gear position sensor. The only way to avoid the first gear to stick when the transmission is cold is shifting the transmission to 2 and then back to D and then all the gears start working properly. I think its not too complicated to change that sensor, you just have to remove the air filter box and you'll be able to see the shift position sensor mounted on top of the transmission.
