This is my first post so apologies if I've got this wrong or if there is an easy solution.....I have a UK 2003 v70 D5 with a confirmed BCM failure...the original unit cannot be rebuilt. I've read around on the internet and understand that it isn't possible to swap a unit from another V70 into my car....so please don't tell me it's impossible as I already know that....the option I've been given from my independent garage is to go with a replacement BCM which is errr...very expensive...in fact I think it makes the car uneconomical to repair.
Apologies if what I'm doing has been tried already or if this covers old ground. I've read the original unit in the car and understand that the units carry a unique serial number along with the part number and software version numbers. What I really need to know is whether the software version numbers on my unit are unique or whether its specific to the year of car...the used unit I've acquired has a different software version which I think may be causing me problems...I'm not able to reload software onto the old unit (tried that) so the next option is to find a used unit with matching software versions. The car has DSTC.

In Volvospeak BCM is a bit vague because there are two "body" modules
What is the location of the unit in the body and what are its functions?

Hi thanks for the quick response - I'm referring to the Brake Control Module...basically the black box which sits underneath the ABS pump behind the main fuse box in the engine bay on the right hand side. I should also have mentioned that I don't have a problem with the serial number....just need to know whether the software numbers are unique to the units. Basically I think my car is rejecting the transplant due to the software versions being different...this could be because the replacement unit came from a car without DSTC for example but I'm not totally sure.
What would really help me out a lot is if someone out there with an 03 or 04 v70 D5 WITH DSTC AND DICE could read their BCM and post me the software numbers. My car is an 03 but I think it may be an 04 spec as it has the newer style wing mirrors.
To help things along a little...here are the numbers from my old unit...the old unit did have DSTC.
Hardware - 0008671224A (looks like the part number)
Diagnostic 08685405A
Software number 0008691777A
Software number 0008637562G
If anyone has a matching set please let me know.

As you are UK based have you tried contacting These chaps with a view to repairing your unit, they have repaired loads of Volvo parts for users on one of the Volvo forums and come highly recommended, I know your part number isn't listed on the BCM repair page but they are worth giving a ring in the morning - Mike
Cheers Mike, unfortunately the old unit is toast (quite literally). I think I may be looking at a replacement from Volvo + reload of the software. I did try a reload on the replacement unit but Volvo scan the unit before they do the reload so this gets blocked...I suspect this is a software block...basically the new unit from Volvo comes pre configured with code that the scan accepts before performing the reload...maybe the new units are shipped with a different part number for example. My plan at the moment is to find a unit with the same software configuration as my old unit..if this doesn't work then I'll have to go for a new unit. I did see a company in the USA who supply "reconditioned" units which will accept the reload but the prices aren't really much cheaper than buying a new unit in the UK.

I've swapped a used unit in place before and only had the red (!) illuminated afterward. The car then went in and had the used unit reprogrammed to the car.
I had a brand new non-dstc BCM that i swapped in just to see what would happened, it wouldn't accept it mainly because there was zero software loaded onto it ever. I swapped in 5 different 8671224 BCM's all from different cars, it accepted all of them aside from illuminating the (!) light.
I can't remember what messages VIDA gave me when I did all of this.

Cheers mate...I was starting to think that no one had ever tried this. Just taken delivery today of a used BCM so will be giving it a go tomorrow...I will post the results. I've tried to match the date stamps as close as I can 03W105 vs 03w166 so I'm hoping that the software versions on the units will be the same.
