Hi,
I have a problem with a 2002 S60 non-turbo with 131K mi. The car shows the "Engine System Service Required" message in the text window, but no CEL. No codes show using a generic OBDII reader. My local shop has a sophisticated code reader (but not vida-dice) that they used and told me that it showed an ETM issue and suggested that it was failing. But since it is not a Volvo vida-dice system, I am not completely sold. Especially since the car does not exhibit any of the usual ETM failure symptoms (oscillating idle rpms, surging, hesitation, etc). Furthermore the ETM passed the fuse removal/replacement test that XeModex uses to help pinpoint an ETM problem. A XeModex tech thought that it could be the MAF sensor or a vacuum problem. I've cleaned both the MAF and the ETM to no avail. One potential clue is that I can temporarily clear the message by disconnecting the MAF. I plan to replace the all the vacuum lines to the intake manifold before moving on to the more expensive MAF and MAP sensors and the ETM itself. I know a scan with a proper vida-dice system is called for, but before I invest in one and the effort to get it working, I wonder if anyone else has experienced these symptoms and has some suggestions.
Thanks in advance, krh

With the late software for ETM, there can be no noted effects of some ETM issues. On your Denso car you also need to be sure the hose to MAP sensor is not closed or restricted.
MAF on Denso models has nearly a zero fail rate. I have never seen a bad one myself.
Your choices are to go to dealer or a shop with VIDA and have them run the throttle test and then probably need an ETM or replace the ETM and maybe have it not be the problem. Third choice is to drive until the check engine light comes or on until there are other symptoms.

Jimmy57,
Thanks for the reply. I am going to invest in a VIDA/DICE system and check the ETM.
igel53, On this non-turbo engine the MAP sensor is located just above the radiator fan. A vacuum line connects the MAP sensor to the intake manifold (near the ETM).
