Recently my 940, 1996 model auto transmission is having problem.
When the engine is cold, and when driven the auto transmission does not change. It remains in 1st gear only. However after about 20 minutes when the engine has warm up, the transmission is back to normal.
I have change the transmision oil using the Dextron II and also clean the gear housing, But still does not solve the problem.
Currently before I drive, I have to start the car and let the engine idle for 20 minutes before driving and the auto transmission works just fine.
Any advise for my problem is really appreciated. Thanks

I am having a similar problem with an 88 740GLE A/T
I haven't tried warming it up for 20 mins, but only 10. After about 1 mile (warm or cold) it then starts shifting normally. It also will not shift into 4(od?) on the highway sometimes. The previous owner was a reliable mechanic (not volvo, but rather Toyota/Dodge). He pulled the tranny apart and checked everything over, with nothing wrong. Replaced the filter/fluid, and kept driving it. It has been this way for a year or more, I just purchased this from him. Any ideas on problems/troubleshooting?
