Check engine light reset

Can it just be reset by unplugging the battery? or do you definately need a reset tool? Thanks

Depends on the year. '96-'99 have to have a code reader to reset them.
'98 S70, 230k, purchased new in '98
'96 855 GLT, 163k, purchased lightly used in '99

The service light cannot be turned off by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery. For 1993-95 model years, there is a procedure of using a jumper pin and pressing a button in a specific coded sequence.
