I have a 92 740 wagon with about 160k miles. I just noticed in the past few days that, seemingly within the 1st few miles of driving after cold, sometimes when I come to a stop, then try to accelerate, the engine will rev some before the gear re-engages... it won't usually do it more than once or twice, then it's fine for the rest of the day. The rest of the shifts/downshifts are fine, properly timed, no slippage, and gear engagement from park is fine, even when cold. It almost seems as though there's a sticking valve or something that loosens up after driving some. The fluid level appears fine as well, and isn't burnt or discolored.
Anyone else experience this? It doesn't seem to be one of the more common AW tranny issues, as searches haven't turned anything up.

I suspect it did before I bought it; it had 140k miles when I bought it early 2012, and the timing belt decal shows it was changed on 2003 @ 118k... so 22k miles over 8-9 years probably involved some sitting. That said, it's been driven daily since I've had it.lummert wrote:Had the car sat for any period of time?

Your car is a great candidate for some trans additive that lists seal conditioning. AW-71 gearboxes are known for hardening seals and doing exactly what you are experiencing. They respond well to Trans-Medic, Lucas, and other additives of that type.
You can't pour anything into a gearbox that fixes worn out clutches but if it is seal issue then you may be fine with additive. Cheap to try.

I have some Lucas, guess I'll give it a try. If that doesn't work, I might see about having it flushed. BTW, it didn't do it at all today; the intermittent nature and firm engagements when it does shift don't seem like clutches to me. I did read somewhere (maybe brickboards) that the AW-7X's are somewhat DIY rebuild friendly, if it comes to that.
