1999 V70 GLT Valve Tick Question

Post by TwoVolvoGuy »

My father and I recently purchased a 1999 V70 GLT. It was always dealer serviced and I had all records given to me when I bought it. It has 110,000 miles. One day, the valves started to tick. The ticking has since gotten louder. My father said there has been a slight loss of power and when accelerating the engine makes noise like it is trying but does not seem to pull as hard. We took it to a dealer this weekend to be looked at.

According to their inspection there is a problem with the variable valve timing mechanism. They said there is a special kit to fix this that only the dealer has and costs $2060. Does that sound right or could it be something else?

Other things of note: Occasionally the oil light would flicker but the previous owner said the dealer had looked several different times and determined it was a sensor issue. Our dealer told us the same thing. Our inspection also revealed that the strut mounts are bad.

Thank you for your help!

How is the oil?
How clean or dirty is it under the oil cap?
I got rid of the tick noise by switching over to Pennzoil Ultra full synthetic. The oil washed out all kind of crap.
Oil pressure light may by triggered by a bad o-ring at the end of the oil pickup tube - or somewhere around there.
Here is a link to the picture with the bad o-ring :

Oil was just changed with Mobil 1, which did not help one bit. Old oil was fine, no junk in it. Here is the code and notes from the dealer, I typed right from the printout they gave me:

1. CEL code P0014 - CAM POSITION

2. TECH ADVISED VEHICLE HAS STORED DTC ECM-644 --FAULTY POSITION. TECH ADVISED VEHICLE WILL NEED VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SOLENOID, HAB AND OIL PAN SEALS. RECOMMEND REPLACEMENT OF TIMING BELT AND SERPENTINE BELT.

The timing belt was done before I bought the car. Could it have skipped a tooth? Or something else?

Start with the easy stuff.
Remove the timing belt plastic cover and check the timing marks, they differ from engine to engine.

Take pictures.

If you have records of timing belt having already been done then there is no need for it again unless they have found belt damage not mentioned.
If the oil pan seals need to be done, which is very likely, then that is done first. Aerated oil reaching the head causes hydraulic tappet noise and also causes issues with cam positioning. The foaming oil is "spongy" and can't hold the desired position.
I'm not sure what HAB seals are.
With no mention of oil light coming on at idle, the suspicion is greatest for the pickup tube seal. That can allow air to enter the oil but usually the oil pressure will be great enough to keep the low oil pressure lamp off.

The oil light literally flickers. It will turn on for a fraction of a second when driving, then disappear for a few minutes, then reappear for a few seconds or blink a couple of times. This tick just started happening. Thr car was perfect during the purchase and for a month after. It just happened one day. Is there a guide or post somehwere that outlines the procedure? Can anyone link me to the part(s) we need to buy? Thanks for all your help so far.

Looks like timing marks are good. Filter used was some bosch filter from autozone.

I just bought that above. Should do the trick right?

We had the same issues with a 2000 V70 we got our nephew. Jimmy as usual has probably hit the nail on the head with the oil pick up tube o ring. We replaced ours and the engine noise went away. At the same time we also put in a new solenoid, this made P0014 go away.

I did not think that foaming oil could affect the CVVT solenoid until I read Jimmy's post. If I had to do it again I would get the oil pick up tube serviced and then see if it makes P0014 go away.
