1999 Volvo S80 Carwash Sunroof Failure

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

1999 Volvo S80 Carwash Sunroof Failure

Post by WhySoSerious_413 »

Hello everyone

Just passing by to update everyone on this topic. Friday afternoon as I was preparing myself to go out at night, decided to do to an automatic carwash, usually I would do it manually. As I'm seating in the car and exiting, the blow dryers turned on and as I'm going through I hear loud bamm and glass scattering all over the place including a bit inside the car. I come out the car and the WHOLE sunroof glass is gone!!!!! I was angry like you wouldn't believe. I called the main office and explained what happened and they said someone would call me. I called the police to make a report and as the police showed up, an employee showed up too. He called his boss (Identified as Mark) on speaker phone and explained what happened and immediately Mark said "its a Volvo right". The employee looked at my car and said "YES, HOW YOU KNOW", Mark said "IT HAPPENED BEFORE AND WE AINT PAYING FOR THAT". I was like "WHAT!!??" and Mark goes explaining how VOLVO's has a faulty on the sunroof glass and they know about it and something about a recall. I told the Mark I never heard of anything about that.

I called the dealer on speaker phone and told them what happened and I asked about the recall or anything close to that. Of course dealer said "NO" there is no such thing and that they never heard any such thing(of course they not going to admit to this). Mark hearing this said hey I got a letter from Volvo stating such info. I was like Mark can you mail me that letter and he said gladly. Now before going to the dealer of course know what you are talking about and know everything you need to know because they don't like fixing things for free. Trust me if a $8 wash turned into a $700-800 job you would need to!!.

Mark gave me all the info

Call Volvo Consumer Affairs 1-800-458 1552 ( call first very important)
Police report and fax it to Consumer Affairs
Make appointment with Volvo Dealer
Letter Stating Failure

I called Consumer Affairs and I explained what happened and they said yes about the sunroof failure but I would need to bring the car to a Volvo dealer. I called the dealer back (did all my homework first) and I told them what I knew and who I talked to at Consumer Affairs and guest what the respond was " silence and a "please hold" after several minutes the lady comes back and tries to tell me everything I know and what I just told her. I said " I know all that information I'm just calling to make an appointment". They didn't like the fact I knew what I was talking about.

On the day I had to bring it to the dealer the check for any damages near the sunroof glass to make sure it wasn't anything that fell on the top of the car and shattered the glass. After they send the info to Volvo and wait for an approval.

Letter stating Failure Sunroof issue
Letter stating Failure Sunroof issue
Something I want to point out, how the letter states ALL Volvo retailers have been alerted (see they wont agree to this unless you know about it) and also Volvo New Car Warranty, My Volvo is a 1999 far far from new, if it happened at the carwash and its the original glass, Volvo would replace it. Hope this is helpful to anyone if you ever come across this issue.

I am aware of the failures when the metal "beams" that run left-right across front edge and rear edge of the glass have fallen off. I suppose it could happen if one of the beams is no longer bonded to glass across a good portion of the glass but has not fallen off yet. When those beams are not there the deflection of the glass is significant.

Your forward beam does not appear to be there.

Everything blew out at the end of the carwash. I don't know what beams you referring to. The ones in front and rear of the glass or on the sides?

if its the sides or front and rear they are there just resting on top of the inside cover.

The front and back. I couldn't see it in the picture. Can you tell if it is still bonded to the glass all the way across?

The bowing of glass in spots along the front and back edges is not what I have seen on sunroofs broken by impact when the beams are still bonded. I know yours was not impact broken, only stating what I have observed when the glass breaks and beams are still holding to glass.
