2002 V70XC Steering wheel upgrade

Post by LASteve »

Found a very nice condition wood-trimmed wheel from a 2005 V70.

(The one I found includes the airbag)
Is it cross compatible with my 2002? I have the same steering wheel controls for cruise and stereo, but no phone.

While I'm on that subject, can I install a phone equipped HU-850 in place of the HU-650?

I'm not sure about the wheel. I know it will physically install and air bags will work but I'm unsure if the steering wheel switches were changed with the major network changes in 2005. The SWM the switches connect to through the contact reel (AKA clockspring) is changed effective 2005.
The phone Volvo uses in US for the few model years was an analog phone and getting service is likely impossible. AT&T, T-Mobile and other GSM carriers ceased all analog phone support. Verizon, Sprint, and other CDMA carriers do not accept any new analog subscribers and may have stopped support of analog equipment by now also. The phone is separate from radio anyway.

I rent lots of cars and have driven 2014 Volvos with bluetooth phone connectivity. A Blue Ant visor clip-on works much better as far as getting calls made and will read incoming texts to you. The voice and microphone is a tad better on the built in car equipment on Volvos but Blue Ant betters the typical mid size mass market car (camry, accord, altima, fusion) equipment according to callers and how I can hear incoming voice.

All the factory stuff I've tried has way too much interrogation before they finally dial a call. I want to hit button (newest Blue Ant doesn't even require you touch the command button, voice recognition for wake-up) and say "Call Joe" and the next thing I should hear is the announcement of number called unless there are multiple same names in address book.

It should
I bought an 04 R wheel and airbag.
I used the radio buttons on an 07XC and they work just fine

Thanks for weighing in, Jimmy.
With respect to the radio, My curiosity points to being able to use the keypad with an enabled bluetooth head unit (Grom, etc.) otherwise, it would be a moot point.

Happy to hear that, JRL.
