855/V70/XC70 Roof Rail swap - trim issues

Post by Jazzop »

I bought a set of so-called "Euro rails" off eBay and I'm having issues with the trim bits-- the semi-ovoid bolt cover plates and the rear gutter cover pieces. The new rails did not come with these pieces, and the pieces from my original rails do not fit.

Pics should be attached. If they don't show up, please be patient until I figure it out.

1. What kind of rails do I have?

The original rail is sitting to the inside of the "new" rail, which is mounted.

2. The bolt recesses on the new rails are about 50% larger than the original ones, so the little plastic covers don't fit. I have been to the dealership and searched the parts catalog for the 855, V70, and XC70; they only list one part for all these models, and it's the small cover.

3. The new rails leave a longer portion of exposed roof channel than the original ones. Thus, the original trim pieces that cover the rearmost couple of inches behind the rails are too short. I positioned the old rail next to the new one to show the extra gap.

There are two types of rails
Standard rails and the thicker XC rails

Those newer rails may be P2 (2001-2007) rails which are entirely different

Do P2 rails fit on the 850? I was under the impression that they wouldn't. These went on perfectly, including the windshield side trim.

Was their another rail design available in the Euro market? That might explain why the dealership doesn't show these in their parts catalog.

Those look like P80 (98-00) XC rails to me.
I'd work the dealer a little harder on it.

The thicker style roof rails were fitted to the 99- phase one V70 cars in the UK/ Europe, mine has them on it, I will look up the part numbers for the missing trim parts in the morning on Vida - Mike

I have the same rails on my '95 wagon. I pulled the trim and the caps from the car in the salvage yard. I think I got them from a '98 XC70.

Sad to say the stealers have been dropping parts like crazy. One of the down sides of owning an older car. I was told that they no longer carry bolts for the rear exhaust support bracket (about 3 years ago). After 10 years it's a crap shoot.

If you need help with your tidbits, let me know.

Those are pre-2001 XC rails (Pre-2000 in Europe since they changed models a year earlier).

I took my rails off once in a binge of ecomodding and by the time I put them back on I had lost the little covers. I just put black duct tape over the openings and haven't given it a thought since. Not a single person has ever commented, "Oh my God, you've replaced your nearly invisible covers with nearly invisible tape!"

2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia Q2 - Totaled in 2022. Not my fault.
2011 XC60 - sold
2000 V70XC - given to a friend, wish I still had it.

Hi there,
Got this off of an older post, hope you don't mind. I just bought the same rails (the wider type) and they did not come with the tabs or covers. Same issue as you. Did you ever get anywhere with the dealer? Or, did you find another solution?
Thanks,
Scott

When I am at the junkyard I grab all six covers from an xc70. I hate those clips and usually disregard them, They are not uniform and the washer clips that the covers snap into have to be perfectly aligned and and the right ones, I.E each clip has a certain cover. PITA. I just ignore.
