2000 S70 - Loud Popping from Windshield

Post by pman7373 »

Hello:

I have researched the posts and it seems like my Volvo's problem was not specifically addressed. (Please forgive me if it was addressed in a post I did not find.)

The periodically pops. It can be when going over bumps, but also it is just when I am driving. It sounds like a piece of rock salt is hitting the windshield. I am also getting more road noise than I remembered.

Could the windshield seal be separating which would cause both of the loud popping and the road noise? Or is it more probable that the popping is coming from something else (like the dash mounts?)

Many thanks.

Most likely you're hearing dash parts. When there isn't a bump, usually it's from "thermal collision" when adjacent parts with different coefficients of expansion heat up or cool down.

The excess road noise could be from the subframe mounts getting worn; with heartfelt respect to your venerable Volvo, it is almost old enough to see ******* for the first time.

It might be broken dash mounts too. Try gently turning the bolts under the hood to see if any of them are loose. If so, you will likely get some pops as the pieces move.

I have the same problem in my C70. You should try moving the dash by hand while driving and see if it makes a similar sound. If you find a solution for this problem, please let me know, because it can be pretty scary, sound like a rock hitting the windshield.
