Interesting Concept On New Car Features

As a Slashdot reader I found this post thought provoking. Whether it's hard good features like heated seats or softgoods like navigation. As cars become more smartphone like enabled I see this move likely.

There is a limit. There are things that are cost effective to do in this way as the hardware for the feature is cheap enough that the mfr would put it on every one. Volvo started this on the 98 S/V70's with the trip computer and also with the lock/alarm system. Several other manufacturers had similar features with unlock capability.
I don't think you'll see it as seat heaters or other features that are hardware intensive.
This stands a HUGe chance of happening with some features related to connectivity to phone. THere will be 100% back up cameras on new vehicles soon and the screen being in 100% oc cars is going to do two things: open the door for any functionality that needs an MMI that could be software unlock. close the door on aftermarket audio. IF the screen is fitted then many mfrs will use it as the a/c-heat control panel and for other features on the car as well as audio system. Removing it to install another HU would eliminate the control of those features. At least for a few years until that industry sees any sales potential and develops a replacement head unit that also incorporates all the functions of the factory hardware.
