1997 850 pcv kit ?'s

Post by junemann1 »

So it appears I am needing to do the PCV cleaning, and I am having a hard time figuring out what to buy.

I see from thread surfing that IPD or FCP kits are the most popular, but some people have been critical of the parts quality in these. I have seen suggestions that range from ordering the FCP kit, and then separately ordering a few specific OEM pieces. Some suggest emailing FCP and telling them that you want Volvo only parts (anyone know how much that ends up costing?). Is there anything that doesn't come in the kit I should order as well? I believe I read somewhere that I should have some extra vacuum hose on hand.

Any suggestions on the kit would be appreciated.

Thanks!

i bought the kit that's marked as OEM from FCP and i believe the parts all came in blue-box cartons and volvo shrink-wrapped packets:

http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-p ... bo-v70t100

pic attached is what i got in the mail. between this and all the wrappers for the radiator hoses, my garage is absolutely pornographic for the blue-box faithful.

this was for a 99. i dunno if the same parts can be used for earlier cars. FCP does not seem to think so. you can check on the page for their kits exactly what parts will be included and by whom they were manufactured.

EDIT: the point of all this is that if FCP says it'll be OEM, you can trust it.

Is your car turbo?

I would suggest getting a 1 ft of 3/8" high pressure fuel line.

Don't buy the kit. Read the thread below carefully...

DIY: 1998 Volvo S70 GLT PCV Mod: no more smoking dipstick!

The bottom line:
- Use 5/8-inch heater hose, or fuel hose.
- Keep the oil trap, just clean it with some solvent, use a screwdriver to poke it clean. Then re-use it.

So just to make sure I understand, If I am doing the PCV Mod, I would order:

Heater Hose with ID = 5/8”, $6 for 6-foot roll at Advance Auto Parts.
- 956561...Oetiker clamp...qty = 4; $1.94 x4
- 976584...Oetiker clamp...qty = 2; $2.00 x2
- 977964...Oetiker clamp...qty = 2; $2.58 x 2
- 8653339...Short hose to engine block...$5.85
- 1271653..Short hose to engine block... qty = 1; $8.76
- 1271654..Hose to top of engine... qty = 1; $21.24
(I guess you can use heater hose here, just a guess)
- 9146266...Intake manifold gasket... $13.86

However if I was feeling cheap, I could purchase a cheaper clamp, and not purchase 1271654? is this correct?

Also, just to clarifiy, I am quite the amateur so the detailed picture threads really go a long way towards my successful completion. So I could follow along with these, and then once I have everything apart use these alternate materials? Or would that be overdoing it?

FCP doesn't use junk parts in their PCV kits anymore. No need to worry if you go that route.

if you don't have the tool or an appropriate set of end cutting nippers to set the oetiker clamp, you probably shouldn't try to use it.

you can use worm drive clamps instead if you prefer.

:?: He probably means 4 feet. But there are several other amendments to the parts list.

To fix the PCV using much cheaper, but totally effective, alternative parts, read cn90's link. It is very clear and thorough. Use heavy duty heater hose or use fuel line, as cheapo heater hose may kink and get blocked.

You may want to read more of cn90's linked thread, you are missing a couple points.

- Don't use the cheap heater hose, get something like Gates Green Stripe, or get fuel line. You don't want that hose to collapse.

- Your list needs to also include 4 feet or so of 5/16 vacuum line (or again, a fuel line works well), for the line from the nipple on the intake manifold. Right now the parts list you show will leave that open and that won't work.

- worm clamps ("cheap clamps") are totally fine and many people even prefer them in this application.
