As mentioned elsewhere on the forum, the temperature gauge is just a notch to the right from the center and I need to top up coolant just a bit every week. I am planning a thermostat and water pump change soon, but in the mean time it really itches me if there is a way to diagnose a bad head gasket without actually cracking it open? I do have compression test gauge, I guess if it shows lower compression on a cylinder combined with the rest of the symptoms it is safe to assume the gasket is blown? Or should I first eliminate the possible causes that are easier to solve?
Probably I should stop posting on the forum and finally get my hands dirty.

Well, I took some time to watch some really nice videos about the head gasket testing methods so I am a whole lot smarter now. Any Volvo specific stuff is still welcome. I wish I could get that neat Napa testing set here.
