Drive Axle Seal Help

Post by kk5zc »

I have a 95 850 Turbo. The drive axle seal was leaking and I pulled it out. It had to be ordered so 2 weeks went by before I finally was able to put the new one in. This seal is different than any other seal that I have ever replaced. You can see a picture of the seal at this link.

The picture is confusing me. I think that the metal ring should go out. However, on the picture it says "Inside". I tried to put it to the inside but the seal didn't seem like it wanted to go in that way. I think the edge of the seal was trying to catch.

So I have 2 question for someone that definitely knows the answer to this.
1 - Which side goes out. Rubber side or metal side.
2 - How far does the seal go in. Does it go flush with the transmission or does it go in until it stops.

I installed the seal but it also leaked. I just ordered another seal, and I want to make sure that I install the next one correctly.

Thanks,
Bobby

the side that has the metal on it goes to the outside of the transmission. and it goes flush with the transmission not until it stops or it will leak.
