98 V70R Compared To A 98 V70 AWD

Post by rmmagow »

A friend has asked me to help with his V70R. I have a V70 AWD. Both are 98's. Is the vac plumbing, electrical, most mechanical pretty much the same? I'm going to look at how my TCV is connected and compare to his as well as SAS related components and the EVAP system. At first glance, they pretty much look the same. My car works fine, his not so much.

Yes, the only difference is the AWD. Obviously the AWD is an LPT and the R's ECU/suspension is different, everything else is the same.

Yeah, it is. Mostly I'm just helping with the standard busted vac line codes and some ignition problems. More or less a stage 0 and teaching lesson. I'm no master mechanic but in the kingdom of the blind....

The things you asked about are the same. The engine is a different displacement but the service things are the same. Same plumbing for crankcase vent system, turbo control valve, and fuel lines.

When you are done do not expect to run like yours. Your LPT will outrun it initially. The R engine only shines at higher revs when its turbo is in its sweet spot and the torque limiting program for R's of that year is no longer hindering the engine.

I believe the years of R's that arent AWD is 96, 97. I wasnt sure about the 98's.

So, V70 T5, 850R's are FWD w/HPT? Sounds like fun. My very first Volvo was a 98 V70R but repair forums were pretty much limited to rec.autos.tech BBS system. The car just plain spooked me and I dumped it as soon as I fixed the big stuff. Had I known about MVS (if it existed then) I'd still be driving it. HPT is a blast to drive, but the LPT is a better commuter and stuck-in-traffic car.
