2000 S80 T6 No Crank - I'm out of options

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2000 S80 T6 No Crank - I'm out of options

Post by mciniello »

Hi there,

I recently bought a 2000 S80 for very cheap. The previous owner said it died and wouldn't start.

I found that he must have tried to trouble shoot it because there was a junkyard ignition switch installed, and the alarm fuse was pulled.

To start trouble shooting, I replaced the dead battery with a brand new one, and cleaned the leads, and grounds. I've checked every fuse in the car. I jumped the starter relay in the engine bay fuse box and the car cranked, so i know the starter, relay and connections to the starter are fine. It seems as tho, the ECU isn't sending the command to activate the Starter relay.

I replaced the fuse for the alarm siren, installed a brand new ignition switch, cleaned the connector on the ignition antenna. Still nothing. The electronics respond when a turn the key to start, with everything going blank, but I still get no start. I've tried starting it in neutral, with no luck.

I'm wondering what the next things to check are? What else is needed for the ECU to close the starter relay?

The only notifications on the dash are abs, and transmission service. Although at one point brake failure, and alarm failure poped up, but then disappeared.

One other thing is there seems to be a problem with the ignition lock cylinder. it often spins 360, and won't catch. All the other interior electronics seem to work fine.

I'm thinking:
Neutral switch?
Fuel pressure?
siren?
try replacing the ignition antenna?

What other mysterious parts of the puzzle are needed for the engine to turn over?

Thanks in advance!

I think CEM itself is the culprit.

The CEM being the fuse and relay box in the engine bay, or the ECM, computer?

CEM is Central Electronic Module.
Keys and car configuration stored in it.

I took the CEM out and inspected it. Couldn't identify any cold solder joints or burn marks, but i suspect it's the issue. The CEM isn't providing the ground signal needed for the starter relay. When I manually grounded that pin on the CEM, the engine turned over, but didn't start.

I have also discovered that the previous owner removed the siren. Would this prevent the car from starting also?

I ordered the Volvo diagnostics tool. Hopefully it will provide some insight.

My question now is does the CEM require any other inputs for it to ground the starter relay pin, such as transmission/neutral switch, or siren inputs?

Transmission should pull to ground CEM's D9 contact.
everything else is proper reading of key and the right key.

So i took my ECM, CEM, ETM, TCM into Xemodex to get everything checked out.

They found that the ETM will need repairing as well as the CEM. Apparently the CEM didn't have any Keys loaded to it. Any idea what would cause the CEM to lose its key programming?

Hopefully the end to this starting issue is insight.

Thanks for you help Doublebug, I really appreciate all the info!

Bad battery can cause loosing keys.
Also bad CEM that can cause flash corruption.

Hi Doublebug,

So I've got a virgin CEM from Xemodex. I'd trying to figure out if i'd be better off trying to load the software myself. I have a clone DiCE and I was considering buying a 3 days subscription to Vida.

This route would be cheaper than having to tow my car across town to the volvo dealer.

Is the software download process simple? Will it download the proper Key codes, or will keys need to be programmed separately?

Feels like i'm getting closer to getting her running!
Thanks!

Actually I have not done it. I'm not using Vida for software download.
But first I would call dealer (or write Volvo) and ask If you allowed to make new CEM reload.
Some operations like key programming can be done only by dealers.
