98 V70 T5m Vs. 2001 S60 T5m!!

Post by mt98t5 »

I just bought a 98 V70 T5m. My wife drives a 2001 S60 T5m. They both have the same engine and turbo, right? My wife's S60 will slaughter my V70, and it has 30k more miles (220k vs 190k). Whats the deal? The weight difference isn't that much but the S60 feels way faster. It will shred the tires in 2nd when the boost builds. I have installed a K&N air filter and a Snaab tcv in the S60. The V70 is stock. Any ideas, answers as to why this car is so slow?

Well, for starters, it's not extractly the same engine. While both cars have the same engine code (B5234T3), and the same basic block, the 1998 T5 puts out 237 hp and 240 lb-ft while the 2001's mill has 10 more ponies and 243 ft-lbs of torque. Part of this improved output comes from new engine management (Motronic 4.4 in the '98, Motronic ME7 in the '01), the addition of an electronic throttle, and from exhaust VVT, which is present in the '01, but absent in the '98.

All that being said, how are plugs, wires, and cap on the '98? Is all the basic Stage 0 maintenance in date?

Because the plugs is probably 190k old, so is everything else. I bet the intake manifold is full of carbon and the pcv system is plugged.

Different turbos too. The 98's are insanely laggy. A 99+ actually will take off just a bit better - better engine management system, electronic throttle, different turbo flange, VVT.

I'm willing to bet there's a lot of rubber under the hood that needs to be upgraded, in addition to the basic stage 0 maintenance.

VCA, haven't seen you around in quite a while. Good to see you back.

I installed new NGK copper plugs, wires, and pcv system. I haven't done the distributor cap yet, or vacuum lines. I was contemplating installing a boost gauge to help me see what the boost is doing. This will be my 6th Volvo, and I also own a '98 C70 Saffron T5a coupe. I am no stranger to these cars. I just find it hard to believe that the S60 is so much faster. I also noticed I need to ride the clutch more in the V70 from a take off. I would agree that the S60's turbo spools way faster than the V70's. Does that also mean it runs out of steam sooner?
