HI, I used to have an 88 740 with a m47 in it. I know have a 86 turbo 740 with the M46 but want to change it to the m47. Do i need to make up a new drive shaft due to O/D unit no longer in the picture or search the junk yards for the right set up? Has anyone done this before and knows the in's and out's? I am grateful
for any suggestions.

The M47 is not rated by Volvo for the torque of the turbo engines. I would think it will live a long life behind a turbo engine if you don't drive aggressively a lot and if the engine is at stock settings and not making even more than the standard amount of torque.
I can't recall ever seeing an M47 trans with anything but the Giubo coupling flange. Having a shop make a shaft will likely be a problem. The flanges used with the rubber disc (Giubo) are unique to BMW, Mercedes, and Volvo. I'm not sure the pilot hole size that each of those makers use is the same.
