1999 V70 XC Small amount of gas leading from schrader valve

Post by warcraftjunkie »

So it's been a week since I changed my oil and I went under the hood today to check fluid levels on all my components and while I was leaning over the engine I got a whiff of gasoline. Looked at the Schrader valve on the fuel rail and I noticed there was a bead of gas there. Is it possible to replace the Schrader valve or do I have to replace the whole fuel rail? I've been noticing some hard starts lately after the car sits for a while, but I chalked it up to the fact that my wife had been filling the car up the last two tanks with 85 octane. Looks like I'm getting loss of pressure most likely.

Any advice on the valve?

There is a good chance that you can tighten it like a car tire valve. If not, pull it out and see if you can replace it.

Most auto parts stores have a selection of new valves, NAPA will have what you need for sure. You need to get a schrader valve tool and just unscrew the old one and take it into the store with you to match it up.

The tool is cheap, I have one of these that fits both standard sizes that I also use for AC repairs:

The cap is more to keep crap out of the valve than it is to seal it.

However, there is no such thing as a "small" fuel leak.....

Very true. This morning I went out to the car after it sat overnight and I depressed the valve and absolutely no fuel sprayed/dribbled out. Will be getting this squared away today.

So, I pulled the schrader valve on the fuel rail and the internal o-ring which is visible when you depress the pin was deteriorated to the point it fell apart when I pulled the valve. I called several local auto parts stores and none of them carry a valve that's designed for fuel applications... they only presented tires. I put a tire valve in there as a short term solution, but I know I'll want to switch to a real one asap! I called the local dealership and they also said they don't sell that as a part, but were happy to sell me a new fuel rail for 155.00 Looks like another adventure to the bone yard to scalp one from a donor.

I'm not real sure that the rubber formulation is any different between the valves for a tire and for the fuel but a valve for an A/C system would most certainly have an oil and gas resistant formulation. For that size valve you may actually need to go to an appliance parts supplier since the R-134A automotive A/C valves are normally bigger.

Well, after doing further digging on the Internet, seems others have replaced the valve core in their fuel rails with tire cores with no problems for 3+ years. At least this puts my mind at ease for a while until I get the other problems with "Olga" sorted out.
