2003 Volvo XC70 Damaged Bevel Gear Non Removal Question

Had the rear drive shaft removed from the car today and the coupler is very loose as was expected per the forums.

I read through all of the very well done forums for servicing, replacing and omitting the Bevel Gear.

The only scenario I did not see presented was leaving the broken unit in as it is.

Do I now have to remove the Bevel Gear now, or can it stay in place as it is till I replace it at a later date? (4 to 6 months)
