04 XC90 T6 Timing Belt Question About Rear Locking Tool
So I got my parts from FCP this week and was eager to replace my timing belt, serpentine belt etc. hit a couple of snags already. I managed to snap the end of the nipple to the thermostat housing. I don't see how one could NOT break that thing. Thankfully I found a DIY replacement. My other snag is locking the camshafts. Since I can't use a standard cam locking tool, I bought the rear cam locking tool. Now I don't know how to get the lock onto the cams. There's this piece that I don't know if I should play around with or not, for fear of throwing the timing off. If anyone else has done a T6 timing belt, any help would be hot. Thanks guys.

Sorry, but this isn't an advice post. I also have to do my timing belt soon and I am just hoping someone will reply to your post and help us both. Fingers crossed.

I actually ended up doing the timing belt about a month and a half ago. I did manage to get it done (Probably should have posted that I finished it). Was there a particular step that you were concerned about? I can offer a little help. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures of my progress. but I can try to help you out. I'm sure you've already watched it but I found FCP's timing belt change on the T5 extremely helpful.

I just like to gather all the info I can before I dig in. Mechanical things don't really phase me, but I just like to know what I am getting into before hand. Mainly I want to be sure I have all the parts I need so that I don't have to stop in the middle of the project and order more stuff.
One thing, I keep seeing reference in posts to some kind of camshaft tool. I think it's supposed to hold the two shafts in place while you remove the belts and such. It's supposed to keep them form turing and getting mis-aligned. I didn't see anything like that in the video. Did you get a camshaft tool?
Actually I hadn't seen that video. Thanks. He makes it look easy.
I once changed the evaporator core for my V70 T5. I did that by myself, but it took an entire weekend! After that job, nothing really phases me.

So is the timing belt change of the XC90 really similar to the T5?
I actually performed the timing belt change on my T5 about 2 months ago.
Were there any especially tricky parts?

The differences will be in the cam sprocket/CVT hubs. Look for the info in the P2 or S80 forums. That is the one area in which I lucked out, mine had been done via the PO within a thousand miles of my buying it. ( I just had to do the transaxle
)
see Huzzsaba's post on his 2.5t, should get you where you need to go!

Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Could you possibly supply a link to the thread?FLXC90 wrote:The differences will be in the cam sprocket/CVT hubs. Look for the info in the P2 or S80 forums. I did a bit of searching and I can't find anything that seems relevant to what I am looking for.
I looked for all of Huzzsaba's post as well as searching the S80 forums for "timing belt".
Anyhow, some guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.
