Brake bleed questions

Post by AlanS »

I want to do a full bleed on my 06-XC70, 01-S40 and 95- 850. You guys (gals) prefer any particular brake fluid? AND...since I haven't been under the XC70 as yet...can I do a bleed without taking the wheels off? On some models the bleed screw is nicely assessable from the inside without wheel removal. Is there any 'fancy' procedures: Which wheel first, ABS...etc. ?

Only synthetic fluid. I used the Prestone thing. Wheels need to be removed. The rear bleeders, perhaps the passenger one in particular, are tough to remove because seized. I'd put a good penetrating oil for weeks in advance. Don't force the bleeder, it will snap. I don't care about wheel order, just bleed until the fluid comes out clear. Trick: after the bleeder is loosened, push the brake piston in to quickly bleed what's inside the piston.

Seized bleeder can be replaced. Penetrating oil didn't help in my case, I used cigarette lighter to heat bleeder up. Unequal expansion of bleeder and caliper destroyed oxidation/infusion film between them.
