Hi there,
I have had an indication that my PCV system has become inadequate or needs servicing. There hasn't been any smoke coming from the filler port or dipstick tube. Also, the glove test showed good. However, at higher RPMs during passing, the dipstick pops out of the tube about one inch. So, until I get a chance to replace the PCV system, I installed a "helper hose" on the engine. I got the idea from a different setup on this forum and simplified it a bit. It's basically a 1/4" barb fitting screwed into the side of the oil filler neck, not the cap, with a 1/4" clear vinyl hose attached. I then ran it to the vacuum side of the intake tube, before the turbo. I used the clear tube so that I can visually inspect it on occasion to determine if a catch can is needed. It looks as if it won't be needed but I'll probably add one anyway and change the tube to something like fuel line hose. The setup works great and I haven't had any problems. Any ideas or comments are welcome and needed. This is a great mod if you are careful with the install and have the patience for the fabrication. I'll have pictures later.
PCV "Helper hose". Here's an idea!

I agree with the comment about the PCV. I am in the process of servicing the system. This just helps it move positive pressure better. I did this whole thing VERY carefully. I used strong magnets and a vac whenever I was drilling the hole in the filler neck. I also covered the inside of the filler port so that nothing fell in. Then I ran a magnet around in there and cleaned it out again. I also took my time with everything. The clear(ish) tube is temporary and I am going to use black tubing and a catch can when I finalize it. This was a trial. Seems to be working very well so far and the dipstick hasn't popped out once since I installed this. The only oil that I've noticed in the line is the small drop amount that just stays near the 1/4" barb in the filler neck. It doesn't move from there. Next on my list... clean my motor.

Cool idea and a clean job too!
I think I have the same issues you have, my dipstick gets blown out occasionally. At idle while checking at the filler using some plastic wrap or a latex glove it doesn't suck in or blow out, just a rapid vibration. Good to know that it will just blow the dipstick tube up instead of the oil seals though!
I might try something like what you did... I don't really want to buy the parts and pull the intake off to replace the PCV system properly. How did you connect the tubing to the intake? It looks like you drilled a hole slightly smaller than the tube and just pressed it in. Also are there any sensitive sensors downstream from where you tapped in? I'm wondering of that oily air would be bad for anything.

Thanks! Yes, I took the intake tube off and drilled a smaller diameter hole and pressed the hose into it about an inch. I'm eventually going to install a fitting there as well. The only things downstream from that are two hoses, one for the TCV and the other is for the PCV. Sounds like we have the same issue with the factory system. It should work for you. Take care with the install and make sure you block the filler port before altering so that nothing ends up in your motor.

I have a similar issue. The dipstick has started to pop out occasionally, usually after a long drive in hot weather. I did the glove test and the glove didn’t inflate or get sucked in, it just fluttered. I had a good look at the dipstick and the O-rings are hard and flat. Anyone have suggestions about getting a new dipstick vs new O-rings on the old dipstick? Should I stick with Genuine Volvo, or has anyone tried aftermarket parts? Thanks.
