1996 850 Wagon Rear Shock Replacement

Post by jotzgr »

Does anyone have any recommendations? The odometer is broken (imagine that) and I'm sure this wagon has well over 200K or maybe substantially more on it, so I replaced the original Volvo rear shocks with Gabriel Ultras. Every pebble, tiny little bump or pavement imperfection now jars the entire car and vibrates everything in it. These were brand new and not cheapies so I'm stumped. It didn't ride like this before I replaced the shocks but it's almost unbearable. Thanks.

Take a look at the trailing arm links. My daughters 850 had the same clash bang over bumps. I replaced the trailing arm links and the issue was fixed. the car has about 225K miles on the clock.

You cannot go wrong with original Sachs-Boge. I have those on my '96 wagon and they feel nice.

I have Bilstein touring class, (TC) on the Sedan and they were an instant improvement to the 20 year old dampers.

They are both very similar in price and feel.

And by the way, if your wagon is noisy in the rear, they all are at this age. you can find rear hatch kits on e-bay to tighten up the rattling panels.
It is on my list.
As far as the other poster, my sedan has those issues much more apparent since the pothole season from driving it as my 21 year old winter daily driver.
All of the delta arm bushings and end links are on the agenda for that car this summer.

The Ultras are Gas Charged whereas the OE Boge were standard hydraulics. I've had the Ultras on my car for over 2 years and felt they were great but on the soft side. The one's you removed were so wore it didn't rattle the loose ends in the car or in the suspension that were already there. Btw, the OE Boge's were on my car for 231K.
