2007 C70 Replace convertible top bumpers

The maintenance schedule says inspect/replace the bumpers every 15,000 miles. What does a failed bumper look like? Are dark circles on the boot indicative of the need for new bumpers? How do you clean off the dark circles? How do you remove the bumpers on the roof (as opposed to the ones on the trunk lid)?
