1997 850 Won't Crank, Bad PNP?

Post by jireland90 »

I recently ran into a huge problem with my volvo. It all started when my reverse stopped working. I drove through a puddle that was blocking me from getting to the boat i work on and it was deeper than expected. (I know stupid idea, but Im paying for it now) I could put the shifter into reverse but the car would not reverse. Couldnt hear it shift into reverse either. I did get it to reverse a few times by switching through all the gears quickly. All other gears were working fine, and the car would shift through all gears while in drive. I started driving my other vehicle until i had a chance to look into it and when i returned to it, it wouldnt crank. I researched a little and found that a bad PNP switch could be the culprit. Could this switch also be the reason for the reverse problem?

Notes:
Automatic Trans
have a steady shift arrow when key is turned on
battery is charged
tried shifting through gears quickly, didnt help still not start
codes i got:
P0705 -Transmission range sensor A circuit (PNP code????)
P0442 -Evaporative Emission System Leak detected
P0335-Crankshaft Position Sensor A circuit Malfunction
P0443-Evaporative Emission system Purge Control Valve Circuit
P0414- Secondary Air Injection Switching Valve A circuit shorted

Also are these other codes going to be problems i need to fix before driving. i know the P0442 is just a broken vacuum hose, but the others im a little worried about.

Any help would be great, I'll take all the advice I can get. Thanks in advance.

The no-crank/no-start is probably caused by a failed PNP. There is a relay in the Transmission range selector indicator inside the PNP that prevents the crank signal from going to the starter solenoid.
You may get a crank/no-start problem if the camshaft position sensor fails.
