1997 Volvo 855 GLT Windshield Replacement videos + photos

Post by jreed »

Just wanted to post a couple photos showing the replacement process on the windshield of my '97 855 at about 170K miles.
When I first got to the shop, I thought it looked a little messy, but not too bad.

A guy who looked like an old pro cut out the old windshield using knives:

Cutting out the old windshield (YouTube video):

Lifting out the old windshield and transferring the bottom trim from the old to the new:

He cleaned up the surfaces and then applied some new adhesive with a cordless electric caulking gun:

New windshield going in to position, held with a hand below and a suction cup in the middle:

With the new windshield in place, he put the roof trim back in place:

Then he cleaned up the windshield with some cleaner spray and a towel:

All done in about 40 minutes. Seemed amazingly fast to me.

Was this done on an insurance claim? We have talked about doing this on our S70 due to accumulated minor damage so it would be on our dime. We were wondering about the cost if you feel OK about sharing that info. Thanks.

BTW, Nice wagon ;)

Thanks. Sure! It was just under $170 including tax. The glass was Pilkington and has the same tint and edge pattern as the original windshield, which was also Pilkington. It looks great!

Thanks, jreed, better than I would have guessed for OEM. Pilkington is good glass--my wagon still has the original, but my wife's S70 has an aftermarket replacement due to an impact right on the edge that cracked the OE. That replacement is more brittle and consequently multiple little bull's-eyes.

Now your world will be brighter!

This is helpful Jreed. Thank you.
Trim on mine is shot, worried about water entering if neglected.
Would you post few photos of trim/seal from the front -- finished trim details etc.
