1996 850T Transmission swap - 94 to a 96

Post by bike4fun »

I installed a 1994 automatic trans into my 1996 850T (Auto). It appeared to be a direct fit, except the Speed Sensor (VSS). The 96 model is on the upper side of the transmission. the 94 is on the side near the axle shaft. Also the sensors are very different (including connector plugs).

The problem I am experiencing is that I get a VSS code on the Check Engine read out and i have a flashing Upshift arrow.

I am looking for a resolution to the both.

1. Can I get the VSS to work on the 94 transmission?
2. Is this the cause of the flashing upshift light?

I see that the 94 transmission has an indent on the transmission housing for the 96 style sensor. I am not sure if i drill that out to mount it if the sensor ring is present below the sensor or not.

Overall the the transmission and car work fine. I am not sure the Sport/Winter mode work with the flashing upshift light though.

Thanks for any help you can send my way.

Those are different. I have not read about any successful mods to cure your problems.

Removed the battery connections to do some electrical work. When I replaced them, no upshift indicator present. Still have a check engine light. Need to have that read. I assume it is the VSS code.

Car run and drives strong, sport and econ modes work. Will update when I have more info.
