97 850 - Decoding Vehicle Ident. Number (VIN)

Post by combatkarl »

Hello,
I'm unable to find the answer to this question.
Can the VIN number provide any info on the color of the vehicle? I know there is a paint code on the plate near the driver strut tower, but I don't have access to the car - it is at salvage yard. The salvage yard gave me the VIN of the car, but won't go check the color code. The salvage yard said the dealer would be able to tell.
I've tried various VIN decoder, but don't see any info on color.
Thanks
Karl

That info is not contained in the VIN itself, but maybe Volvo has a database that connects the VIN to the info on the plate.

Curiously, I found that if I used the 97 850 break-down for the VIN number on my 98 V70 I got much better results when looking for various emissions things for my car. Seems the early V70 weren't much more than re-badged 850's

I agree.
cn90's write up for '98 is a perfect mach for our '97 850.
Same for part numbers.
