1999 volvo s70t5 front axle replacements

Post by gentlejax »

yes I know there are videos and posts on it.

but none really show or say how to be sure axle is in all the way. At first when I installed the driver side the axle went in then stopped. I took it out multiple times and put it back in and started tapping it with rubber dead blow hammer till I got it all but a finger tips worth. the tip of point finger maybe half fingernail deep. then it seemed like it wasnt going in further and I didnt want to break something.

put the rest of it back together and car moves.

now for the passenger side.

it just bugs me about the other side. I never heard a click and when I pull on it it just barely moves back and forth . not like in the video where you can tell the clip is in the groove.

suggestions? a pic or one installed maybe...my mistake for not taking one before I got started but I havnt dont this before. pretty simple actually...replaced the strut /spring assembly too...

but I am wondering about that axle. I was trying not to break anything

The passenger's side (right) doesn't have a circlip to snap in place, only the left hand side does. The axle on the passenger's side is held in place by the carrier bearing cap.

thanks and the drivers side is the one I am talking about...the one with the ring...when I wrote this I hadnt started the passenger side.

both are now done...

and I still need to know what to do about the driver side. I really wish they had done the driver side the same way. would be so much better.

car runs fine but its still bothering me

You don't necessarily hear a click when the axle snaps in place and I usually give it a smack on the end of the axle with a short 5 lb sledge hammer to drive it home. If it isn't seated fully you will usually develop a leak at the axle seal pretty quickly. If it isn't leaking then chances are it has snapped in and everything is fine.

It's not leaking that I know of so I hope it's in there. Car runs fine. I'm just a little paranoid

Lee's mention of the leak test is spot-on. I had my clutch replaced last year. A few days later, I noticed some drops of oil dripping from from under the driver's side. Traced it to the axle/tranny connection, took it back to the shop and they discovered the axle was not seated all the way into the transmission. Quick fix and no leak. Trouble free since.

Cant anyone snap a pic from underneath to show how close the axle is to the transmission?

It is typically around 1/16" from the face of the transmission to the back of the inner CV joint when the axle is properly seated.

Ok well.. It's close to that now and it is actually slightly leaking. I looked again after work.

Looks like I will order new seal and replace after I figure out how that's done ... And put the axle back in.

I tried yesterday to get it to go in more but I was afraid I was going to break something
