dealer reprogramming needed?

Post by prospectortom »

I did an used transmission swap. Now CEL on. Flashing arrow. Codes saying bad transmission speed sensor and bad output shaft sensor. I know these parets didnt go bad with my car on stands for 2you days. This is my first Volvo and ive learned sometimes when you replace certain items the car has to hace the dealer reprogramming. 1999 S70

This is not the case with transmissions.

Was the transmission from another year model? If it was you need to swap BOTH speed sensors from the old one 99s have different speed sensors to earlier cars.

Thanks for the input. I got it from a salvage yard. Not sure of the year. That vehicle is gone now. So what are my options do you think?

Pull serial number of transmission and have dealer/MVS run the number for you.

With the codes you have the problem would be what Precopster answered. The 96-98 transmissions will interchange with the 99-2000 models (turbo for turbo and non-turbo for non-turbo) if the analog sensors for 96-98 are removed and the digital 99-2000 ones are installed. One sensor is next to the main connector and the other is on the middle top of case more or less in line with the brake master cylinder if you look down next to master cylinder.
If you have a turbo to non-turbo mismatch you will not know until the sensors get changed. Then it would set a wrong gear ratio code as the final drive ratio is different. Let's hope that is not the case.

The sensors are on your OLD transmsission, not on the salvage car.

Who has that?

Gave my old transmission as a core. I greatly appreciate all of the info from you guys. Ive been driving the car for 2 weeks. It drives like a brand new car. Getting great gas mileage. Just the lights in the dash are aggravating. Lol

One of the sensor's connectors forms part of the PNP connector.

If you can visit a salvage yard ask for the entire transmission loom (excluding solenoid wiring) from a '99 including the PNP switch and the other separate sensor.

Then you can have a spare PNP you can refurb just in case 8-)
