1999 Volvo s70 A/C compressor removal

Post by volvooh »

I have an 1999 Volvo S70. I bought it without A/C working and I did some trouble shooting last night. Though I could not get the compressor to engage, I shot some dye in and chased it with some 134a (I know, not an environmentally friendly approach) to distribute. When I illuminated it with the blacklight, it was very apparent the compressor has a major leak both front and rear of the unit. So I am going to do a complete replacement of the compressor, dryer, and condenser (its bent and will likely leak).

So my question is does any one have and R and R tutorial on the A/C Compressor? Based on its location it seems easiest removed from the bottom since you need to get past the P/S pump and alternator.

Thanks!

I looked into this once and my recollection is the tool and experience set was 'well beyond the reader'

I would go used or rebuilt which is in the 300-400 range IIRC.

Check all your other components for leaks too! Have a peak at the evaporator by removing the climate fan and peeking inside with mirror or fiberscope (search for 1999 V70 T5 ECC fan thread)

Thanks- definitely going with a rebuilt. Not going to try and rebuild on my own. It probably would not end well.

Just to clarify, I am looking for anyone that has experience removing the compressor from the engine...such as a specific procedure or write-up. Did not find much when I did my search.

It isn't that big of a deal on a '99, it is actually easier than on the earlier models since the bolts are easier to get to. I think you may need to at least remove the mounting bracket for the accumulator to get the compressor out but you need to remove the bracket to change the accumulator which you should do anyway.

When re-installing it be sure to add PAG oil to both the accumulator and the compressor. If the replacement compressor is bone dry you need to add 180 cc of PAG oil in the compressor should have 30 cc added to it.

Start the R-134A flow without the AC on after you draw the vacuum and it will distribute the oil before the compressor tries to compress it. Once the pressure equalizes then you can start the system and complete the charge.
