1998 s70 t5 rolled over

Post by Mattmx918 »

Hi all, I found your site through google and was curious if you could give me a hand answering some questions. I've browsed the forums in the past and found it very helpful and supportive and I really like the things I have seen here so far.
I Live in Eastford, CT but recently I rolled a 1998 volvo s70 t5 manual. The roof is compromised, but the engine and transmission and such are fine. I was wondering, do you know what would be involved to do an engine/transmission swap into a shell, and what models this would fit? I have the whole car still, so I have the ECU, harnesses, etc. I'm just curious what models would fit the t5 engine with the manual transmission so I can start a hunt for a decently priced shell.

Thanks Pete I will! First I need to figure out what cars I can look for to put the engine into. I'd hate to have a nice 1998 t5 engine go to waste

It will all be a direct - no hassle at all - swap for another '98 S70 or V70 Turbo and it will be painless for a '96 or '97 850 turbo. From '99 and on everything changed and they have electronic throttle modules and CVVT and a host of other changes. You can go back as far as '94 on the 850 but there are some changes with the speed sensor that need to be dealt with.

While it is not impossible to change out a non turbo car to a turbo engine it is such a PITA that it just isn't worth it.

Thanks Lee,
So finding a turbo model would be my best bet? I'm not the best with mechanics (not the worst by any means either though) but have a friend who is certified and willing to help. What kinds of issues would I expect if I tried to swap to a non turbo model? I was under the impression the shells themselves were all made the same, and as long as I put the intercooler, exhaust, etc. into the car it wouldn't be that much more of a job.

Or cut the roof off! I helped my roommate do this in college, albeit to a '74 Dodge Dart. :-)

(It was a blast to drive.)

Hey Matthew,
I thought about chopping the roof but I'm very leary of it since it's such a support for the car. I'd also have to replace other things as well, so to me that wouldn't be worth it. I'm really curious to find out what difficulties, if any, I'd have switching the engine into say a 96 850 non turbo or a 98 s70 non turbo shell. I don't see why I would have so many complications when (I believe) the shells were all made the same with different engines and stuff added after.

Sell the car to a person who needs engine/trans for maybe $1000.
Then spend $2000-$3000 to get another toy.
