2000 Volvo s80 2.9 Door won't open

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2000 Volvo s80 2.9 Door won't open

Post by Ryan_J_D »

Hello, thanks for taking the time to read (and hopefully reply) to my inquiry. I have a 2000 Volvo s80 2.9. The left rear door will not open from the inside or the outside. I've no idea if the child lock is on, I only recently bought the car (March), and I unfortunately was in a hurry and did not check the door before buying. I'm wondering how to resolve the issue and what it might be?

Also, I am having the following issues:

1. The headlights are constantly on, as long as the car is on.

2. The radio display, and driver information center display (real time fuel mileage calculator, message center) are very dim. I initially thought they were in "night time" mode due to the headlights being always on, but even at night you can barely see them.

3. Having trouble shifting from park to drive/reverse unless I park with the emergency brake set before I turn the car off.

4. Cruise control mostly does not work, although it occassionally does. Sometimes it will stay set the entire drive, others only for 15-20 minutes or so, but mostly it does not work at all. My steering wheel radio controls work just fine, and the light on the dash for the cruise control also usually illuminates if I turn the cruise on.

5. Brakes vibrate. Not sure if it's a pad/rotor issue or an ABS issue. Any ideas or feedback?

Thank you in advance for your help. I am not the world's best mechanic by any stretch of the imagination. :?

Hi Ryan, I will try to answer your questions
1. headlights came from the factory to be on all the time. Your Volvo dealer can change the setting. You may also notice that your high beams will not function unless you have your headlight switch in the on position.
2 Information data is hard to see on my car also. nearly impossible during the day, better at night. try adjusting the rheostat for panel lighting. it is located next to your headlight switch. there is also a panel illumination sensor below your airflow control. See if dirt or dust has collected on this little sensor.
3.You must depress the brake pedal to move out of park. Do you park on any incline? if so some the weight of the car is held by the trany.
4. Check your brake pedal switch for your cruise operation. I had a similar problem, bad switch.
5. If you feel pulsations while braking on a dry road your rotors are probably warped.

as boring as it sounds review your manual. there is a lot of info in it. Also review the posts on how to reset your service light. Mine comes on every 7500 miles.

the child door locks are on the door jamb. They are on or off by the position of a screw, positions A or B. when they are engaged the door cannot be opened from the inside, Normal operations from the outside.

You may want to contact your Volvo dealer and see if they offer free inspections. The two dealerships here both offer a courtesy inspection. Ask if you can be with the mechanic when he inspects the car. The times I have used this courtesy the mechanic really enjoyed educating me on the car.
