Board Policy - No compensation for advice, please

Mod note

Addressing a couple of posts that have come up lately.

This is a Volvo interest board run for Volvo enthusiasts. Offering compensation for advice, help, etc is not in the spirit of this Board, and is to be avoided.

The only place where compensation can be made is in the Help A Neighbor Forum, and all such offers/etc are to be made privately without using Board functions/posts.

Speaking of PMs I often get people messaging me with their individual ETM diagnostic woes. I explain to them that I'm happy to help them if they post up a topic then PM the link to me so we ( the Volvo forum community) can all benefit but few take me up on the advice. Some people just don't get the purpose of forums.

There should also be a note that if you want good advice on this forum you need to be able to do basic tests on a car. There are a lot of posts about people are unsure about a blown head gasket, leaking fluid, lack of power and a simple compression test would answer many of those questions. Instead they ramble on about the issues when really if they are not handy they should just go to a mechanic instead of asking for vauge advice.

We want to be inclusive and not put off beginners. We have had people here who have never put a hood up doing troubleshooting and R&R MAFS, coils, and sensors on cars ...all of whom MVS is proud to help.

Agree Abscate... I had mechanic background but never worked on a Volvo, and through the help of people on this site ive save a ton of money and enjoy freely giving back what ive learned.

My point was if you want to get a good response, try doing a bit of home work first. It sounds obvious but some people choose to be lazy and really those type of posts get little response. There is nothing wrong with helping amateurs, but you need to help yourself before others can help, that is how life works

It is a bit intimidating for novice, or interested DIY automotive individuals.

The questions may not be phrased correctly. Part descriptions or proper names may be off.

I was a Volvo novice in 2010 when I was introduced. I know more than I should at this point.

This is only because I was an enthusiast of all things invented since I was young. Music and cars since 10 yrs. of age. ( Other things as well )

I now own three Volvos as a result.

Anyone with a simple question that we perceive as such, should be given all the consideration and explanation needed, or not reply.
On this site, I see members more than willing to fill the space.

Thanks for inputs guys/gals.

We are working on creating a couple of documents for the "Help my car won't start " crowd. The contributors have been really patient posting the same stuff over and over to those folks, so I want to step up and give a reference document we can point to. We will write them at novice level.

The first one under construction is:

Engine cranking, won't start.
