2001 S40 1.9T Won't Start - think its the fuel pump

Post by LarryS40 »

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and any help would be greatly appreciated.

We bought my wife an '01 S40 1.9T with 125K mi. When it runs well, its a great car, but it decided to die on us about a month ago. Before it died on us, over the past few months, I changed a number of things that it needed:

Fuel Press Regulator
Fuel Filter
ECT Sensor
Thermostat (also flushed coolant)
Both Front Axles
All 4 Spark Plugs
Ignition coil (dont remember which one)
MAF Sensor

I went to start the car the other day and it would crank but not turnover. Opened the air filter and sprayed some carb cleaner in, car started, stayed on for 5 seconds and shut off. I turned the key to listen to for the fuel pump and didn't hear anything. I went to the fuel press reg and disconnected the line and turned the car on and not a drop of fuel came out.

I am assuming now that the fuel pump is dead, but i do not want to put $400 into a pump and it turn out to be the relay :x . I have read that this car has an issue with the relay.

Is there anything I can do to test for this or any advice anyone can give me before I put a bunch more money into parts that won't solve the issue.

Thanks for any advice,

Larry

Did you disconnect the fuel line before or after the fuel pressure sensor?
The pressure sensors are often the cause of fuel not getting thru or at too low a pressure.
You should be able to hear the fuel pump operate when you switch on the ignition to position II.

Hi difflock, thanks for your response, when I turn the ignition to position II, I don't hear the pump, I wait 5-10 seconds to see if its delayed but nothing.
When I disconnected the line, it was from the upstream side of the fuel press regulator

Sounds like it may indeed be your fuel pump. One normally hears a brief whirring noise at turn of the ignition key to start.
You could try repeating with another person at the rear trunk area to act as a listening source at close range to the tank.
Have you checked the Schraeder valve a the right hand end of the fuel rail. Remove the plastic cover and press the pin inside but beware of fuel squirting out under pressure. If there is no pressure building up at the rail then it confirms the pump is not working.
According to Haynes service manual the pressure at the rail should be at 44 PSI.
Any loose wires at the fuel pump, maybe a bad ground connection?
